Young volunteers bridge the digital divide in Lithuanian Red Cross communities

2024 08 08

In a new initiative, the Kuršėnai and Elektrėnai branches of the Lithuanian Red Cross have launched a programme where young volunteers offer digital literacy consultations to seniors. This effort, which began in March, is a key step toward empowering older adults with essential digital skills. Five dedicated volunteers have been on hand to guide seniors through the complexities of smart devices, ensuring they stay connected and informed in an increasingly digital world.

This initiative is part of a larger project, „Bridging the Digital Divide through Intergenerational Exchange,” spearheaded by the Nordic Council of Ministers Office in Lithuania. The project seeks to bridge the generational gap by enabling young people to mentor seniors, fostering both digital proficiency and intergenerational bonds. The long-term goal is to embed this model of ICT mentoring into every local community, making it a valuable resource for all.

To date, 11 seniors have participated in these consultations at the two Red Cross branches. The sessions have covered a range of topics, with a strong emphasis on social networks—how to navigate them, register, adjust privacy settings, and share information safely. Recognizing the growing threat of online scams, the young volunteers have also provided critical guidance on how to spot fraudulent activities and protect personal information online.

Paulina Steponavičiūtė, Head of the Lithuanian Red Cross’s Warm Visits Programme, expressed optimism about the program’s future: „This initiative has proven incredibly beneficial for our community. We hope to see it expand to other Red Cross branches. The feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive, with seniors appreciating the knowledge gained and the young volunteers valuing the opportunity to give back. We’re excited to see these consultations continue and grow.”

Agnė Buraitytė, representing the Nordic Council of Ministers Office in Lithuania, also acknowledged the project: „We are thrilled to be part of an initiative that not only enhances digital skills but also strengthens intergenerational cooperation. By working alongside the Nordic countries and key organizations in Lithuania, we are making strides toward ensuring that technology is accessible to everyone. Digital literacy is essential in today’s world, and the efforts of these young volunteers, in collaboration with the Lithuanian Red Cross, demonstrate how impactful such partnerships can be for society’s well-being.”

This inspiring initiative is a testament to the power of collaboration and the potential of young people to make a lasting difference in their communities. As it continues to grow, it promises to be a vital tool in closing the digital divide and fostering a more inclusive society.
