Biological sex is still not systematically integrated into life sciences and clinical research. As a result, medical knowledge and innovation are often built around a default – frequently male – model.

This has real consequences: delayed diagnoses, lower treatment effectiveness, and persistent bias in how women’s symptoms are interpreted.

The aim of the lecture and discussion is to introduce the public to the Nordic experience of integrating women’s health research into science and public policy, and to explore why women’s health remains under-researched.

The keynote lecture will be delivered by Professor Alkistis Skalkidou from Uppsala University in Sweden, an internationally recognized researcher whose work demonstrates how gender equality in research improves both scientific quality and real-world health outcomes.

Participants of panel discussion:

  • Prof. Alkistis Skalkidou, Head of Whole Centre, Uppsala University
  • Prof. Ramunė Grikšienė (Vilnius University, Life Sciences Center)
  • Gražina Bielousova, Ph.D. (Vilnius University, Institute of International Relations and Political Science; Vytautas Magnus University)
  • Moderator: science journalist Goda Raibytė-Aleksa,

The event is organised by the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO together with science journalist Goda Raibytė and Lithuanian Journalism Centre, supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers Office in Lithuania, with Vilnius University as a project partner.
