Minister of Foreign Affairs Kęstutis Budrys met with Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers Karen Ellemann during her visit to Lithuania and participated in the international conference “Shared Values, Shared Security: The Nordic–Baltic Partnership at 35 and the Path Forward.”

During the meeting, the Minister highlighted the growing importance of Lithuania’s cooperation with the Nordic countries, explored opportunities to deepen engagement with the Nordic Council of Ministers, and emphasised the need to strengthen coordinated institutional action within the Nordic–Baltic Eight (NB8) framework. The discussion also underlined the historical role of the Nordic Council of Ministers Office in Lithuania and identified priorities for future cooperation.

“Close Nordic–Baltic cooperation remains one of the most important pillars of Lithuania’s foreign policy. We aim to further expand regional cooperation within the NB8 format, including beyond foreign affairs and defense,” said Minister Budrys.

The Minister stressed that Lithuania highly values the contribution of the Nordic Council of Ministers, which has played a significant role since the restoration of independence in supporting Lithuania’s democratic transformation and its integration into the European Union and NATO. Today, the organization continues to contribute to strengthening societal resilience to disinformation, enhancing crisis preparedness, and promoting civic engagement.

“The Nordic Council of Ministers Office in Lithuania began its activities even before Lithuania was officially recognized as an independent state. This was a sign of political will and trust that provided a strong impetus for the young nation. Thirty-five years later, we can take pride in the results of this cooperation – a stronger and more integrated region than ever before,” the Minister said.

From Secretary General Karen Ellemann, the message was clear: “The Nordic countries have stood by your side for the past 35 years, and we will continue to do so in the future”.
